Join our seventh Colonel Connection webinar on October 21 at 12:00pm, where we will be discussing "Shoot Your Shot: How to Set Yourself Up for Publishing Success," led by Wilkes faculty members Dr. David Hicks and Dawn Leas MA '08, MFA '09. They will walk us through an appx. 30 to 40-minute presentation where you'll learn the tools and confidence they need to break into the publishing world. From polishing your manuscript to building connections, this session will help you aim high and hit your publishing goals. After the presentation, they will take your questions about anything publishing prep related.

About our speakers: David Hicks is the author of the novel White Plains (Bower House Books), a finalist for the Colorado Book Award and Westword’s #1 book by Colorado authors; The Magic Ticket (Fulcrum Books), an autobiographical children’s book; and a second novel, The Gospel According to Danny (Vine Leaves Press, 2025). An award-winning professor and recipient of two Fulbright scholarships (Czech Republic 2020 and 2022), David is the founding director of the Regis University MFA in Creative Writing and current director of the nationally ranked Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Wilkes University. He and his wife Cynthia are the founders of Electric City Writers in Scranton, PA, where they live with their demonically charming dog Louie.
Dawn Leas MA '08, MFA '09 is the author of two chapbooks and a full-length collection. Her newest collection, The Sin of Being Okay will be released by Kinsman Avenue Publishing in November 2025. Her poetry has appeared in New York Quarterly, The Paterson Literary Review, SWWIM, and elsewhere. Her work won an honorable mention in the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prize and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She’s the assistant director of the Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative at Wilkes University. She’s also a proud back-of-the pack runner, newish hiker, salt-water lover, and mom of two grown sons.
