About this Event

Returning to the body: Functional Somatic Psychotherapy

A somatically integrated Acceptance Commitment therapy approach to the Treatment of complex Trauma and dissociation Disorders

We are excited to offer a hands on workshop focusing on practical tools and insights into healing and integrating the mind-body connection. This session will delve into techniques based in Acceptace and Commitment Therapy and the neuroscience of somatic approaches for addressing complex trauma and dissociative disorders. Join Abby J. Hurley, PsyD, and Michal Kocum, LCPC, CADC, as they bring home their workshop for the 2025 ACBS World Conference and share years of hands on experience for the benefit of our community.

A bit about our presenters:

Abby J Hurley, PsyD

Licensed Clinical Psychologist who works as a practice partner and clinical psychologist at a group practice, Heritage Professional Associates. She also holds an assistant faculty position with the clinical psychology program (PsyD) at Midwestern University. She has advanced training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) as well as specialty training in complex trauma. Further, she has training in Porges' safe and sound protocol, Havening Touch and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Her clinical work focuses on providing both individual and group care for clients with complex needs, most especially those with developmental trauma and resulting diagnoses of Borderline Personality, cPTSD, and DID. She also works extensively with those in the LGBTQIA+ community and those navigating the effects of religious trauma.


Michal Kocum, LCPC, CADC

Trained in multiple therapeutic modalities in Prague, Czech Republic and completed an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2020. During his careers he worked with clients with complex needs within high levels of care (RTC, PHP/IOP) and with substance abuse issues. He is trained in both depth-oriented psychodynamic and behavioral contextual (DBT, ACT) approaches. He is currently working in a private practice in Wheaton and is pursuing certification as an MBT practitioner.
