Elliot Dunne is in a wheelchair as a result of a car accident. He spends most of his time in the virtual city of Etherville, where he is able-bodied. His nurse struggles to draw him back to the physical world.
The one-act play is written and directed by Eamonn Colfer. It forms, along with The Mercy Seat and Little Victories, a trilogy of plays that address the implications of technology in a near-future environment.
The play features Jeanette Sidney Kelly, who’s been performing with the Wexford Drama Group since 2017, featuring in such plays as Portia Coughlan, The Field, and The Factory Girls. It also features Eoghan Kirby, who attended Olga Conway’s Discovering Drama and performed extensively with Buí Bolg, as well as featuring in The Mercy Seat and Little Victories. They are supported by Jessie Byrne, who was a member of Tony McCleane Fay’s Youth Theatre and is currently studying theatre at Trinity College, where she is chair of the Drama Society.
Etherville runs from September 25th – 27th.
Coming soon... The Mercy Seat Trilogy by Eamonn Colfer. The book contains three one-act plays: The Mercy Seat, Little Victories and Etherville. The plays explore the impact of various technologies in a near future environment. In The Mercy Seat, there are euthanasia booths in every town. In Little Victories, the government provides elderly people with robots. In Etherville, virtual reality is indistinguishable from real life. The book was published with the support of Wexford Arts Centre and will be available to buy on their website.
