Do you feed the birds and enjoy watching them on these wintry days? The Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count project will be the next Westminster Historical Society public program on Sunday, February 8, at 2 pm at 110 Main Street in Westminster. Amber Cardwell and Charles Caron will conduct this program and all are invited to learn more about this exciting project.
The National Audubon has sponsored this Christmas Bird Count for more than 100 years.
A dedicated group of birders all over the world conduct counts every year from Dec 14th to January 5th, compile the data and make it available to the public. The Christmas Bird Count is the nation’s longest-running community science bird project and fuels Audubon’s work throughout the year. It is organized into circles, and each circle decides which day to conduct their count. In Westminster it is conducted on New Year’s Day.
Audubon’s mission is to protect birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow. Their goal is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and their habitats.
Their efforts to promote clean air, clean water, healthy habitat, and stable climate are required by the bird population and all humanity.
Due to its long history, data bird counts all over the world are available to analyze bird populations in our town. Join us as we learn how the process works, what the information can
tell us, and what we can learn about the birds in our area. Bring your stories and photos of birds you have found in your yard for others to enjoy and discuss.
This program was originally planned for January, but because of the snowstorm, is now being held on Sunday February8 , from 2-4 at the Westminster Historical Society at 110 Main
Street. It is free and open to the public.
