Show and Tell: Data Visualization in the Sciences

Join us for an engaging lecture and conversation with Dr. Steve Midway, associate professor in the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University.

Every scientist creates data visualizations, yet most receive little to no formal training in this skill. Meanwhile, the number of tools and software options for displaying our findings continues to expand, often overwhelming rather than empowering researchers. This talk highlights how a basic understanding
of human cognition—how people perceive patterns, color, and geometries—combined with simple visualization aesthetics, can
dramatically improve the clarity and impact of scientific figures. By applying simple principles, any scientist can transform raw data into visuals that not only communicate results effectively but also engage audiences and strengthen the overall scientific message
