Info: Married co-presenters Kevin Nielsen, a parent educator with Prevent Child Abuse Utah, and Deondra Brown, survivor of child abuse and also with Prevent Child Abuse Utah, bring both professional and personal perspectives that highlight the vital role fathers play in fostering children’s growth and resilience. Drawing on real experiences, the presenters share actionable ideas to strengthen family connections, support healing, and build resilience in safe, supportive home environments.

Participants will also learn about feminine energy and the importance of acknowledging that all humans embody both energies. The discussion addresses the influence of patriarchy and how it has contributed to harmful expectations for men, while emphasizing that true masculinity lies in balancing both masculine and feminine energies. The session ultimately seeks to redefine what it means to be a man.
Info: This presentation shares the experience of a psychoeducational support group for men over 18 who are primary or secondary victims of crime, sexual assault, and domestic violence. Using a gender-sensitive approach, the group focuses on emotional regulation and trauma recovery through identifying and managing emotions and building coping tools. The program has fostered powerful individual and collective transformations toward healthier, more empathetic masculinities. Rodrigo Coloma will highlight key insights, challenges—including cultural barriers and resistance to emotional expression—and success stories, offering reflections on how gender-informed work with male survivors can support healing and promote safer communities.

Discussion will include how methods should adapt across different developmental periods and how to make the most of “teachable moments.” Brent will share personal experiences—including successes, mistakes, and lessons learned—while raising his son into an emotionally healthy young man. His son will also join the session to share his own perspective and stories about growing up with Brent as a father.
