Welcome back to another night of ancient theatre with the one and only Victoria Ancient Theatre Society! VATS is a student-led club at Victoria University of Wellington that puts on an ancient play annually, celebrating the fusion of Classical Studies and Theatre, to learn from, and to experience in full. This years' experience comes in the form of the Roman tragedy Octavia—the only extant Roman play set in the eternal city of Rome.

Often attributed to Seneca, but likely in truth penned by an unknown playwright we know as Pseudo-Seneca under the Flavian dynasty, Octavia is a hard tragedy depicting the divorce and hardships of the titular Octavia—the first wife of Emperor Nero.

Follow our tragic heroine as she bears the weight of her Julio-Claudian family name and all the expectations that are thrust upon her with it. Bear witness the cruelty of Emperor Nero and his crimes driven by an unbridled and unabated passion. Experience the illustriousness of a grand imperial wedding and follow it with the bloodied remains left by the ruthlessness of Roman politics. Shall Octavia survive this brutal game?
