STARTS: 1pm, SUNDAY 5 OCT
In 2004, Georgina Beyer, the first openly transgender Member of Parliament in the world, famously confronted members of Destiny Church during the Enough Is Enough rally on the grounds of Parliament.
Never a bystander, Georgina faced down the bigots, telling them straight, “Your hatred is totally intolerable!” This was just one of many significant moments that shaped the life of the extraordinary Georgina Beyer.
Born in Wellington, Georgina went on to have an unprecedented local, national and international impact through her commitment to equality and her desire to give everyone the opportunity to reach their full potential in society.
Join us for this special 90-minute walking tour as we pay tribute to the late Georgina (1957–2023) by visiting locations around central Wellington that shaped her journey. Along the way, we’ll honour some of her heroes and listen to first-hand archival audio clips that showcase her humour and resilience.
Georgina’s story is defiantly optimistic – confronting hardship and using her lived experience to change the world for the better.
