About the event

Seeing the Music
Join us for a live painting and live music with singer/songwriter Gabriella Simpkins and expressionist painter Susan Overstreet.

About this Event

Seeing the Music is a collaborative presentation hosted by Gabriella Simpkins, a local singer-songwriter and composer, and Susan Overstreet, a local artist and educator. Over the course of one hour, Susan will be creating a new work in reaction to Gabriella's music, engaging in a dynamic creative exchange and showcasing the magic that emerges from interdisciplinarycollaboration. The final painting will be available for purchase via a silent auction that will conclude at the end of the performance. These artists look forward to collaborating not just with each other, but with the audience as well in this presentation of the creative process in real time.

Gabriella Simpkins is an award-winning singer-songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Cape Cod, MA. Informed by her vast experiences across genres and performance settings, her music exists at the intersections of folk, classical, jazz, and indie rock. Her work explores the nuances of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, as well as how those interactions can shape the world around us. She values music as a tool for community connection, conversation, and activation. She performs her singer-songwriter material regularly in the Boston area, leads workshops and classes, teaches private lessons, and hopes to establish herself further as a freelance composer in the coming years.

Susan Overstreet’s creative process of weaving vibrant colors with a technique of palette knife and brushwork captures a visual tapestry between abstract imagery and representation. Overstreet’s bold expressive style is driven by unique natural elements found in nature that offer an evolving kaleidoscope of color. She paints en plein air and in the studio, inspired by both landscape and the human figure.

Susan completed studio work at George Washington University, and continued studying fine arts at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art League School of Alexandria. Her work was accepted in many juried competitions in Virginia and now New England. Susan has taught at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Milford Arts Council, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod (where she served as artist in residence and learning coordinator), the Creative Arts Center of Chatham, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and the Plymouth Center for the Arts. She has led sketching tours to Scotland, France and New Mexico. She is represented by Tracy Lindholm Nee, 780 Main Street in Dennis, MA. SusanOverstreet.com.
