On Saturday November 8th, RCZN will be hosting "Brandon Moreau & the Butter Bean String Band". Brandon, a revered Cajun fiddler & vocalist born & raised in Basile, Louisiana, is teaming up with the Cajun flavored Henrie Brothers, a celebrated family of string driven musicians from Middlesex NY.
Growing up in Basile LA, Brandon was deeply influenced by the hometown hero, Cajun music legend, Dewey Balfa, whose style is core to Brandon's fiddle style and feel. In addition to Dewey Balfa, Brandon learned Cajun music from both his father Kim and grandfather Vorrance Moreau, so was influenced by their prairie style from day one.
After years of playing in Cajun bands throughout Acadiana, Brandon was drawn New Orleans to expand his musical horizons, where he’s lived and performed for over a decade. Once in NOLA playing on Bourbon Street, he formed “Brandon Moreau and CajunGrass”, working from his roots in Cajun music weaving in Honky-tonk, Swing and Bluegrass, pushing the envelope of what’s the norm.
In addition to his love of Cajun music, throughout his life Brandon immersed himself in all aspects of Cajun culture, most notably Cajun Cuisine, especially “Butter Beans” which he literally grew up on, and remains a part of his heritage he loves to share with the world. In fact, for the Harmony House show on Nov 8th, Brandon will be making large batches of vegetarian and meat based “Butter Beans” to share with all who attend … putting his skills as an experienced New Orleans based chef to fine use.
Who are the Cajun Flavored Henrie Brothers? While the Henrie Brothers may be off the radar in the Cajun music world, they are a household name in the music currents of Upstate New York and beyond. The Henries hit stages performing in the 1970's playing Old Time music, remarkably winning First Place in the Old Time Band space at the Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA in 1976 just two years after beginning their musical journey.
The brothers which comprise the "Cajun Flavored Henrie Brothers" are Bobby on Fiddle & Guitar, Billy on Accordion & Fiddle and Doug on Upright Bass.
Of the Henrie Brothers, Bobby Henrie is the most well-known, launching Bobby Henrie and the Goners in 1985, a rockabilly trio exploring all kinds of vintage rock n’ roll, swing and everything in between. The Goners have performed countless events, venues, concerts and festivals, notable is their long run at the Trumansburg GrassRoots Festival since ’92. On guitar Bobby holds a vital role in the band The Djangoners, (formed 2007) a four piece gypsy jazz band, embracing the guitar style of the seminal artist Django Reinhardt.
Bottom line ~ Musically whatever the Henries touch turns to gold. As a Cajun band the Henries will both hit core veins of the genre and take dancers on 2-steps and waltzes they never imagined.
