The TrailRecon Challenges are off-road / overlanding challenges created by the teams at MERUS Adventure™ Park and TrailRecon.
These 2-day incredible journeys are designed to test your driving and overlanding skills in one of most beautiful canyons in North America, Palo Duro Canyon. During a Challenge ride, you will descend 850 feet into the canyon and navigate through 4 geological layers of exposed dirt, sand, rock, stone, as well as the legendary “red dirt.” You will face more obstacles than you can count along the way while enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in Texas through Palo Duro Canyon.
Drivers who complete the challenges are awarded unique badges for their vehicles and challenge coins to help them remember their accomplishments.
The TrailRecon Challenge is an amazing journey through all of the Blue-rated trails at MERUS Adventure™ Park. The Challenge starts off on some of the easier Blue trails to give drivers time to warm up to the terrain. It then gets progressively more difficult as the Challenge drops into the canyon. If you are new to off-roading and want to improve your skills while driving with a supportive group or if you just want to have a fun day without too much stress, this is the challenge for you!
This challenge is suitable for all vehicles with 32” tires or larger and some stock vehicles.
Drivers and their passengers should plan to spend up to 7 hours each day on the trail.
The TrailRecon Extreme Challenge is an adrenaline pumping journey through every Black-rated trail at Merus Adventure™ Park. If you can imagine condensing Moab’s harder trails with the Rubicon Trail and trying to run them over a two-day period - you’d get the picture. This challenge is just one obstacle after another that will test your skills as a driver and the mechanics of your rig. Rest assured, if you complete this challenge, you will leave MERUS a better, more confident driver.
Drivers participating in the Extreme Challenge are required to make a run through the Black lane of the MERUS Test Track on arrival night to make sure they and their rigs are up to this particular challenge.
Drivers and their passengers should expect to be on the trails for 8 hours each day and should come prepared to recover themselves and others in the group should the need arise.
This challenge requires experienced drivers and modified rigs with +37” tires, winches, and lockers.
The TrailRecon Expedition Challenge is run rally-style over Green and Blue-rated trails. Throughout the 2-day ride, drivers and their passengers - while working in a group of 4-5 rigs, will navigate to different points in the park performing designated tasks related to driving skills, recovery, first aid, communications, navigation, survival, geology, and Leave No Trace Principles at each stop. Guides will be available to help along the way.
This challenge is designed to be low-stress, educational and really enjoyable. Plan to spend an hour prepping for the challenge in the morning and about 5 hours on the trails each day.
This challenge is suitable for all vehicles with 32” tires or larger and some stock vehicles.
