Ethnically Ambiguous By Alex McDonald Villarreal
When you were without power, without water, and without cell phone service, what did you think about?
Your life?
Your family?
What did you discover about yourself? What did you remember?
“Ethnically Ambiguous”, is an autobiographical piece written and performed by Alex McDonald Villarreal, where he reflects on almost 40 years of life, while secluded by the forces of nature.
It’s a play with universal themes, relatable experiences, and thought provoking stories. It tears open our preconceived notions of judging a book by its cover, how we define ourselves, and how far we allow others to define us. It’s also a love letter to family, and how they help shape that definition of ourselves.
Ethnically Ambiguous was workshopped during Different Strokes’ 2024 369 Monologue and Short Play Festival, to riveted audiences who laughed, cried, gasped and jumped to their feet in response to what they referred to as “powerful”, “genuine”, “brave”, and “broadway caliber.”
