Christopher Durang was a mad genius of theater, and in this masterwork of comedy, which won him Tony, Drama League, Outer Critics, and Drama Desk Awards, he has outdone himself. He has woven a sad-but-funny story about three grown-up siblings: the world-weary Vanya, the ever-depressed Sonia, and the effervescent movie-star Masha, into a Chekhovian mash-up. The Durang-Chekhov amalgam generates a pathos-tinged humor that balances the familiar with moments that are unique, rewarding, and surprising.
