Join us for our 25-26 season opener concert - “HOPE AND REMEMBRANCE” on Monday October 27, Wisconsin Lutheran College - Schwan Hall, 7:30pm - Peter Szczepanek, guest cellist
In partnership with “Violins of Hope - Wisconsin” and Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, we look forward to this unique Holocaust focused concert.
Program:
VICTOR ULLMANN: String Quartet No. 3, Op. 46
SHOLOM SECUNDA: String Quartet in C minor
FELIX MENDELSSOHN: String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13
In the shadow of devastation, music endures not only as resistance but as remembrance. “Hope and Remembrance” explores the resilience of the human spirit through three string quartets woven with historical memory, cultural identity, and transcendent artistry. From Viktor Ullmann’s searing voice from within the walls of Theresienstadt, to Sholom Secunda’s rediscovered Jewish lyricism, to Felix Mendelssohn’s storm-tossed yet redemptive final quartet, this program illuminates both the cost of oppression and the enduring light of creative hope.
The evening’s program is not only a concert but an act of memory. Through performing these works on instruments from the Violins of Hope collection while in their Wisconsin residency presented by the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO), we revive the echo of voices silenced by genocide and oppression. This music educates, heals, and bears witness. In honoring these composers - Ullmann, Secunda, and Mendelssohn - we remember not only the suffering of the Holocaust, but the hope that lives on through their art.
