Opening Reception for Mawte: Bound Together: December First Friday!

Join us for First Friday in downtown Waterville at the Colby Museum’s Joan Dignam Schmaltz Gallery of Art, located in the Paul J. Schupf Art Center, as we celebrate the opening of Mαwte: Bound Together with the exhibition’s curators and artists! Brief remarks and an introduction to the exhibition will take place at 5:30 p.m.

The Penobscot word mαwte (mαw tteh) roughly translates to “it is together,” “sets together,” or “lies together.” The concepts of togetherness, proximity, and interconnection inform not only the thematic and material foundations of the exhibition, but also the curatorial approach—one in which eight artists actively contributed to the development of the show, creating new works for the project.

The exhibiting artists create work that binds and rebinds across past, present, and future, building relational ties across generations. Whether making the fragmentation of severed binds visible, celebrating the resilience of binds that persist, or presenting reparative visions of Indigenous sovereignty, these artists sustain ancestral knowledge and forge new paths, revealing the ways in which innovation is inextricably bound together with tradition.
