Join our panelists to discuss the current state of sanctions on Syria, examining their impact on governance, humanitarian access, and international diplomacy. By bringing together regional experts, the discussion will consider the future of sanctions in light of ongoing reconstruction prospects, and shifting global power dynamics. Join us for a timely and thought-provoking conversation on the effectiveness, ethics, and future trajectory of sanctions policy at this critical crossroads for Syria and the international community.
Moderator
Narges Bajoghli is the Faculty Lead and Associate Professor of Middle East Studies at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). She also serves as the co-director of the SAIS Rethinking Iran Initiative.
Panelists
Ibrahim Al-Assil is a political scientist and Middle East scholar. He is a research fellow at the Middle East Initiative at Harvard University and leads the Syria Project at the Atlantic Council.
Karam Shaar is an economist who founded Karam Shaar Advisory Limited. He serves as a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the New Lines Institute and the Chief Economic Consultant at the Resident Coordinator’s Office of the UN in Damascus.
Charles Lister is a senior fellow and the director of the Syria Initiative at the Middle East Institute (MEI), where he focuses on Syria, terrorism, and insurgency across the Levant.
