Why a seed swap?
Businesses are limited to selling seeds to the "packed for" date on the seed packets and cannot sell those seeds past the year on the package. Meanwhile, seeds are viable for much longer than that! The exact time frame varies from species to species, but most seeds are viable for 5 years or more passed their packed for date!
Seed swaps are also a great way to try a new variety without a monetary commitment. Have you been wanting to try cucumbers, but you're not sure they will be suited to your area? Come to the seed swap! Are you a fan of sunflowers, but you aren't sure if you will like that color combination? Come to the seed swap! Are you looking for more native plants to add to your perennial garden, but you aren't sure which species will do the best? Come to the seed swap!
What about the extra seeds?
Without fail, there will be seeds left at the end of the seed swap. These seeds are then evaluated for packed dates and likely viability, then distributed to local food banks, community gardens, and schools to help your neighbors eat, grow, and learn for free!
