The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington presents the docufilm Operation Trieste Bathyscaphe, directed by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, which chronicles one of the 20th century’s greatest marine exploration achievements—a symbol of courage, innovation, and international collaboration.
On January 23, 1960, the bathyscaphe designed by Auguste Piccard reached 10,916 meters in the Mariana Trench, piloted by Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh—a world record. The film combines Istituto Luce archival materials, personal testimonies featuring Bertrand Piccard and Kelly Walsh, and follows the bathyscaphe's reconstruction, now preserved in Italy and the United States.
More than a scientific achievement, it embodies a visionary dream: exploring the unknown through courage, curiosity, and peace.
