About the event

WCS Orchestra Fall Concert
The WCS Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the WCHS PAC.

The Beginning Middle School students, sixth-grade students from Lakeview and seventh-grade students from Edgewood, will play three pieces: “Song for Christine”, “Hot Cross Buns”, and “Mozart’s Melody”. All of these songs will be played pizzicato, plucked.

Middle school students from Lakeview and Edgewood will perform combined for the first time.

“Being able to combine them and seeing the large and beautiful sound that they can make is very fun,” Spradling shared. “It is exciting to see those kids’ faces when they all come together for the first time and actually hear just how big of a sound they can actually have.”

They will play “Jupiter”, a big orchestral piece, by Gustav Holtz; “Yo Ho Ho”, a sea shanty; and the “Can Can” by Jacques Offenbach.

The Obbligato orchestra students will play three more complex pieces. “Medieval Wars” is a piece that uses the music to tell the story of knights in a tournament. This piece demonstrates the students’ ability to keep on tempo and to show dynamics even at a fast pace. “Electric Symphonie” is a challenging piece that forces them to work together as an ensemble. “The Wicked Waltz” has the seasonally appropriate level of spookiness as Halloween approaches.

The Philharmonic orchestra students are the most advanced group that will perform. They will play “La Llorona”, a Mexican folk song with deep ties to culture; “Farandole”, a popular 19th century orchestral piece by Georges Bizet; and “Plink Plank Plunk”, a complex piece that utilizes pizzicato, the same plucking technique used by the beginning middle school students.

“I am so excited to show how much these students have been growing, how passionate they are about the music, and just how much good fun they have been having in class,” Spradling said.

Mason agreed, “It’s so good to see them collaborating together, working together, blending together, singing together, having joy together.”

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door to support the WCS Orchestra Department. We invite you to join us for an evening of beautiful music.
