In Australia, over 200,000 tonnes of clothing and textiles are dumped in landfill each year. Fast fashion’s environmental toll is huge, but there are basic skills you can learn to help tackle this.
Breathe new life into your well-loved clothes with a hands-on repair session in collaboration with the Warrnambool Repair Cafe. We'll chat through how to approach different sewing situations, share stories and relax in a cozy setting.
Our instructor Kay will guide you through basic repair techniques, including patching, hemming, and sewing on buttons. Bring along one or two garments in need of some TLC - a tear, missing button, too big or small.
You’ll learn both hand and machine sewing techniques to make simple repairs and alterations to your clothes no matter your skill level. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some sewing experience, our instructor will tailor guidance to your needs.
By the end of the session, you’ll leave with your newly repaired clothes and the confidence to tackle future mending projects at home. All tools and materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own sewing kit or machine if you have one.
Types of repairs we can help with:
- Taking up, letting down, and fixing hems
- Taking in or letting out side seams, waistbands, or darts
- Closing or patching rips and holes
- Sewing on buttons and other fasteners so they stay secure
Cost is $20 covering costs with donation to garden activities. Wear comfortable, warm clothes, bring a notepad and water bottle.
