Join WordPlay at Drifters Cafe on Saturday, August 23, at 3:00PM to meet our friend and local author Leenie Hobbie, author of Elder Legacies, the first book in her herbal history mystery series that chronicles the life of herbalist and apothecary Thomasina “Tommie” Dubois during a pivotal time for women.
In Elder Legacies, readers meet Tommie, a 24-year-old war widow and Scottish immigrant, and her 16-year-old African American apprentice Nell Fisher. The year is 1918, and Tommie and Nell own and operate a tearoom and apothecary in the bedroom community of New Babylon, situated near the nation's capital. Tommie soon discovers that what appeared to be a sleepy village instead holds dark secrets harking back to the days of slavery. Mysteries unfold and Tommie, a reluctant and inexperienced sleuth, rises to the challenge. As she tries to make her way in a man’s world, Tommie discovers she may have more in common with rabble-rousing suffragists than she first imagined.
Leenie Hobbie lives with her husband in their hand-built home in the mountains of Rio, West Virginia, where she writes, draws, and teaches plant lore and traditional herbalism. Her weekly Folk Herbalist's Journal newsletter is available on Substack at leeniehobbie.substack.com.
