The Thames Barge, its trade - and the Berkshire connection
Occasional barge sailor Jim Birch traces the development of these iconic vessels and reviews the ownership, cargoes and economics of the barge trade from the 19th century to the laying up of the last working barge in 1970. He identifies a surprising Berkshire connection to these east coast vessels and concludes with a look at the barge races which have been running for over 150 years.
