This walk is probably one of our best local walks. It takes us for a loop around the city, from the Whanganui River up to Virginia Lake and back, taking in many of our city's points of interest on the way, including Whanganui River, Virginia Lake and the Durie Hill Tower
TRACK DESCRIPTION & ROUTE: This walk is made up of a mixture of walkways and footpaths. There are a couple of steep climbs and descents including the climb up and down St John's Hill, There are steps also but they can be bypassed, so this walk is suitable for strollers (with assistance). ROUTE: We start off along the river before turning up St Hill Street and into and around Cooks Gardens. We then head for the pathway beside the railway line (Te Tuawai, The Spine). Then it's up the Victoria Park Zig-Zag, and then around half of Virginia Lake before going down the Christies Hill Walkway past the deer sanctuary at Peat Park, then back along the river. Following the loop walk time and energy permitting, an optional extra walk across the City Bridge and up the Durie Hill Steps to the viewpoint at the top
DISTANCE: 9.5km (11.5km with Durie Hill)
ELEVATION GAIN: 100m (160m with Durie Hill)
