Beethoven’s op.16 was originally conceived as a Quintet for Piano and Winds (oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon) but the composer later transcribed it to a Quartet, cleverly adapting it for violin, viola and cello with piano.
The Piano Quartet by Mahler is an astonishing work he composed as a student at the tender age of 16! Sadly, only one movement survives.
