Come and learn all about bats with Dr. Susan Loeb at Stumphouse Tunnel in Walhalla, SC while also viewing Isaqueena Falls (and learning about the legend behind the name).
About:
Clemson researchers are leading a nationwide effort to uncover why bat populations across North America are declining at alarming rates—and how these losses are reshaping bat communities and disrupting fragile ecosystems.
Dr. Susan Loeb, a nationally respected Southeastern bat expert, Clemson adjunct professor, and research ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service Southern Research Station, co-leads Clemson’s comprehensive bat research program alongside David Jachowski, assistant professor of wildlife ecology in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation.
When & Where:
Meet at Stumphouse Tunnel at 10:55 am.
11 - 11:20 am Dr. Loeb will address the entire group and provide background, context and point out what to look for before entering the tunnel.
The group will split in two so everyone can hear Dr. Loeb inside the tunnel.
11:20 am - 11:45 am Tunnel Walk
11:20 am - 11:45 am - Isaqueena Falls Walk
11:45 am - 12:05 pm - Groups switch - one group does the tunnel and the other the waterfall
12:10 - 12:15 pm - Any remaining questions and lunch at the picnic area if desired. Please pack a lunch.
What to Bring:
-Flashlight
-Shoes that you don't mind getting wet
-A rain jacket and layers (it's always about 52 degrees and damp inside of the tunnel)
After the event:
Feel free to explore the trails in the area right at Isaqueena Falls or down the road at Yellow Branch Falls.
