This September, The Waldo Theatre presents the Midcoast’s most magical theater event of the season, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the Tony and Drama Desk Award winning musical comedy.
The play focuses on an eclectic group of six “middle-schoolers” (each portrayed by adult actors) who will do anything it takes to be reigning champion of the bee. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their private lives, these competitors spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. The play has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor, a joyful night of comedy and quirk that celebrates the pursuit of victory and the gift of being true to oneself.
Cast members, drawn from across the Midcoast, include Imij Armstead, Emily Sue Barker, Roosevelt Bishop, Honora Boothby, Anne Fanelli, Kjirsten Flores, Eliana Goldberg, Cameron Kinney, Niall Lessard, Joseph Lugosch, Mariah MacFarlane, Kimberly Nutt and Rachael Schuster.
This community theatre production is being directed by Soren Barker, with choreography by Niall
Lessard, musical direction by Merle MacFarlane, costumes by Kathleen P. Brown, stage management by
Shari Wills, and is being produced at The Waldo by George Bates.
Performances are scheduled for the evenings of Sept. 5, 6, and 13, with Sunday matinees on Sept. 7 &14, 2025.
