Presenters: Robert and Melinda Creech
Robert and Melinda Creech will present Restoring a Texas Tallgrass Prairie, exploring the history and ecology of tallgrass prairies and describing their journey to restore inherited farmland to native grasses. Once stretching across 167 million acres of North America, less than one percent of these native tallgrass prairies remain due to farming, grazing, and development. They will highlight how prairies, sustained historically by buffalo grazing and periodic fires, play an essential role in biodiversity, pollinator support, wildlife habitat, erosion control, drought resistance, water quality, and carbon sequestration.
They will provide examples of remnant and restored prairies across Texas, including the Waco area, and encourage conservation efforts through developing “pocket prairies,” volunteering, participating in citizen science, and advocating for prairie preservation.
