Film pripoveduje nadvse intrigantno zgodbo o tem, kako so jazzovski glasbeniki – ne da bi se tega zavedali – pomagali pri prikrivanju političnih in ekonomskih interesov kapitalističnih držav, predvsem Belgije in ZDA. Slednji državi sta v 60. letih želeli še naprej imeti nadzor nad črpanjem urana v Demokratični republiki Kongo in tudi nad drugimi viri v Afriki. Kongo si je, skupaj s številnimi drugimi afriškimi državami, priboril neodvisnost, a so se njegovi voditelji še vedno borili z belgijskimi zavojevalci za popolno dekolonizacijo. Ameriška politika si je prizadevala odvrniti pozornost svetovne javnosti od dogajanja v Kongu, kjer je vlada pod vodstvom demokratično izvoljenega premierja Patricea Lumumbe želela prevzeti nadzor nad rudniki urana. Obenem je želela skriti dejstvo, da je CIA podprla vrsto državnih udarov v Afriki, tudi v Kongu. V ta namen je CIA angažirala jazzovske zvezdnike, kot so Louis Armstrong, Max Roach in Nina Simone, ter jih kot »glasbene ambasadorje« poslala na turnejo po Afriki. Ko leta 1961 umorijo Lumumbo, Max Roach in Abbey Lincoln vdreta na sejo varnostnega sveta Združenih narodov in protestirata zaradi vpletenosti ZDA v Lumumbov umor. Z arhivskimi posnetki ter s pričevanji glasbenikov in politikov film pretkano poveže jazz, hladno vojno in boj za dekolonizacijo.
Cikel pripravlja Zavod Jazz Cerkno v koprodukciji z Mestno knjižnico in čitalnico Idrija. Projekt podpira Ministrstvo za kulturo.

The film tells a very intriguing story about how jazz musicians – without realizing it – helped to conceal the political and economic interests of capitalist countries, especially Belgium and the USA. In the 1960s, the latter countries wanted to continue to control uranium extraction in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other resources in Africa. Congo, along with many other African countries, had gained independence, but its leaders were still fighting the Belgian invaders for complete decolonization. American policy sought to distract the attention of the world public from the events in Congo, where the government led by the democratically elected Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba wanted to take control of the uranium mines. At the same time, it wanted to hide the fact that the CIA supported a series of coups in Africa, including in Congo. To this end, the CIA recruited jazz stars such as Louis Armstrong, Max Roach and Nina Simone and sent them on a tour of Africa as “musical ambassadors”. When Lumumba is assassinated in 1961, Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln storm a United Nations Security Council meeting to protest US involvement in Lumumba’s assassination. Using archival footage and the testimonies of musicians and politicians, the film cleverly weaves together jazz, the Cold War and the struggle for decolonization.
The movie series is organised by Zavod Jazz Cerkno in co-production with Idrija City Library. The project is supported by the Ministry of Culture.
