Julie Taymor’s radical reimagining of Shakespeare’s most gruesome play, “Titus Andronicus,” unfolds in a feverishly surreal, past-meets-present dream space where Roman general Titus (Anthony Hopkins) returns victorious from war with the Goth queen Tamora (Jessica Lange) as his hostage, setting in motion a shocking tragedy of bloody revenge. In Taymor’s hands, one of the Bard’s darkest and most disreputable works is transformed into a mesmerizing visual spectacle and a terrifyingly relevant commentary on modern political violence.
