🎭 A performance based on Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain (dir. Krystian Lupa), which opened the 60th theatre season.
Director Krystian Lupa, responsible for directing, scenography, and lighting, is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary European theatre. Journey is the key word in Lupa’s creative method – a journey into the unknown, rooted in exploration and collective work, delving into the mysteries of literature and the human psyche.
In the case of The Magic Mountain, it is, above all, a journey into Mann’s own personality and his secret connections with the main character, Hans Castorp. For Lupa, it is essential that Mann himself never lived through his hero’s path but longed to experience it. Thus, he had to project it for himself, drawing on other people’s experiences and written sources. This writing journey became more real to the author than his family life, which concealed his true passions.
After five premiere performances at the Salzburg Landestheater, The Magic Mountain was hailed by critics and audiences as one of the most unforgettable productions. Its success continued on tour in Poland, where the theatrical elite greeted it with thunderous ovations.
🗨️ “The greatest value of Lupa’s production lies in its elongated time, where waiting becomes condensed: on stage, one waits for life for countless hours, until waiting itself turns into life.”
