Join us for a captivating lecture by Dr Begoña Vila, Doctor of Astrophysics and NASA Instrument Systems Engineer, who will share insights from her work on two groundbreaking space telescopes:
🔭The James Webb Space Telescope – the largest and most complex telescope to date launched into space, with which Dr Vila has been directly involved since 2006;
🔭The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope – scheduled for launch in May 2027, designed to show an infrared rays image of the sky.

Dr Vila began her work on JWST in Canada, contributing to the Fine Guidance Sensor & Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (FGS/NIRISS). Since 2013, she has continued her work at NASA as Systems Lead for FGS/NIRISS and Deputy for Operations of the JWST Science Instruments. She is also part of the Systems team for the Roman Space Telescope, serving as Test Director Lead for its Thermal Vacuum Test and Co-Lead for its Fine Guidance Sensor.
Her contributions have earned her numerous awards, including the NASA Exceptional Public Achievement Medal (2016) and the NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal (2022), as well as several honours in Spain.
