Conversations about climate change often lead to feelings of overwhelm and doom. In the face of biodiversity loss species extinction and the changing chemistry of the planet our challenges can feel insurmountable. So where do we start? It’s time for a paradigm shift: one that brings us back to nature and back to connection with each other. This story of humanity is counter to the current dominant culture which promotes individualism profit and extraction. There is a different way of being long demonstrated by Indigenous peoples centered on community relations and living within the boundaries set by nature. These communities along with scientists and people on the front lines of environmental change are actively changing the dominant narrative inspiring hope and showing a way forward today.
Sarika Cullis-Suzuki is a marine biologist by training and is currently the co-host of CBC's The Nature of Things.
