Double Book Launch with Arleen Paré & Marilyn Bowering

Please join us in celebrating two local authors, and their latest books: ENCRYPTED by Arleen Paré and THE UNFINISHED WORLD by Marilyn Bowering!

In September 2020, Arleen Paré’s almost twenty-year old grandson moved into the basement of her home to attend courses nearby. After suffering a bout of severe anxiety and depression, he was forced to drop out of his second-year computer science program after one month. In an effort to quell her own feelings of helplessness and growing anxiety about the situation, Paré turned to poetry. Both a tender tribute to a beloved grandson and an elegy for coming of age in our modern, online society, "Encrypted" is an honest and illuminating narrative of a life arrested and a home haunted by grief.

In "The Unfinished World", Marilyn depicts the life of Pearl, who is distraught after her grandmother Nora's death. As she retraces her grandmother's last journey, she recovers a series of handmade dolls that have been handed down in the family for generations. Hidden within each is a tiny note from grandmother to granddaughter. Pearl is lead to recall and recount tales given to her as a child. It is these stories, ranging from the semi-mythic past to the present, that enable Pearl to see her life and her struggles against the larger scale of human survival, dislocation, war, and immigration as well as love and responsibility to the future. Pearl's mysterious gift of communication ultimately allies her with the survival of another species and also provides the key to unlocking love and happiness for herself.
