Deconstructing Denim: An Upcycling Workshop
Join Maya Bergeron, founder of Uni Design, a Vancouver based upcycled fashion brand known for its bold patchwork and denim creations. With years of experience transforming reclaimed textiles into one-of-a-kind pieces, Maya will guide you through the art of taking denim apart to give it new life.
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll spend the evening deconstructing denim together. You’ll learn practical tips and tricks—where and how to cut, the best ways to unstitch, and clever seam-picking techniques. We’ll explore creative ideas for reusing denim, experiment with fun patchwork patterns, and open the floor to your questions about upcycling and patchwork design.
What to bring:
We’ll provide a selection of jeans and jeggings to practice on, but feel free to bring your own denim to cut apart a pair for future projects if you would like to take it home with you afterwards. Please bring scissors and a seam ripper from home if you have them (a few extras will be available to share).
Whether you’re new to sewing or already love working with fabric, this workshop is a chance to slow down, experiment, and reimagine denim in fresh and sustainable ways. If you have been curious about denim but too intimidated to give it a try, this is your chance !
