Coming to MALTA by AIDA Instructor Trainer and AIDA Education Committees member, David Watson, visiting from Dahab (the home of freediving), the AIDA Depth Competition Safety Freediver Course is the gateway to be an official safety freediver for AIDA depth competitions (up to 80m), and is the first step to the Advanced course for 80+m depth competitions.
The ENTRY requirements for enrolment are as follows:
AIDA2 Freediver or Equivalent
Be 18 years of age or older
Comfortable doing 35-40m constant weight bi-fins dives
Able to perform a solo rescue from 20m
'Ideally' have some competition experience (athlete, judge, safety)
It is designed to test your abilities to the maximum and will cover advanced and very latest rescue techniques as well as thoroughly covering teamwork required to conduct team rescues and be part of an AIDA depth competition safety team.
Some of the exercises covered on the course are as follows:
35-40m Constant Weight Bi-fins dives
30m dive + 30 second surface recovery + 20m dive
20m dives with 3-5 seconds notice, at fast pace (early turn simulation)
Ability to perform solo rescues from -20m
Ability to perform team rescues from -25m with 30 seconds standby
Ability to assist and rescue from -25m with BOs at random depths (es. surface, 10m, 25m, in random order) covering all team roles (Safety 1, Safety 2 and Safety 3), including extraction (hand-off to the medical team)
Ability to manage stress
Pass the theory exam (75% min. score)
The course is over two days; SUNDAYS: 21st & 28th September at Cirkewwa (weather permitting) and will involve 3 open water sessions, theory (online & in person) and final theory exam.
