Feature talk: National Wattle Day

Wattles are more than just a splash of gold in the bush — they carry stories, symbolism and secrets. Join Mike Gilmour from the Queensland Wattle Association for a lively and informative talk in celebration of National Wattle Day.

In this year’s presentation, Mike will explore the many faces of Australia’s floral emblem — from the diversity of wattle species across Queensland to the deeper meaning wattles hold in our national identity. You’ll hear surprising facts, challenge some common myths and walk away seeing this golden bloom in a whole new light.

Mike will also touch on the broader symbols that shape what it means to be Australian, all delivered with the wit and warmth he’s become known for — after all, he proudly calls himself the “Wattle Wag of Queensland.”

Whether you’re a keen gardener, nature lover or just curious about our national symbols, this session promises a mix of fascinating history, cultural insights and botanical beauty.
