Program: Ancient Life Along the Vermilion
Description: People have been using the resources and landscape of the Vermilion River Watershed for thousands of years. Its topography, water resources, and accessibility, provide a perfect spot for hunting and gathering, and later, settled village sites of ancient American Indians. In this program created especially for the Brownhelm Historical Association, we will delve into ancient lifeways along the Vermilion River - why American Indians lived here, how they used the features of the surrounding landscape, along with a review of their tools and a look at some of the fascinating and beautiful artifacts that they left behind.
About the Speaker: Local historian and Amherst City Councilman Matt Nahorn has grown up and resides with his family at Amherst's 1811 Historic Shupe Homestead. Living at the Homestead and learning its history led him to become deeply interested in the history of Lorain County and to found the New Indian Ridge Museum in 2000. He currently serves on the Amherst Historical Society's Curator Committee, the Brownhelm Historical Association's Collections Committee, and is a member of the Lorain County Historical Society's Board of Directors.
