Roman Aqueducts

The Roman Aqueducts are the recognisable symbol of their age. They are also major engineering feats unsurpassed until the Victorian canals and railways. The Romans may not have been the greatest inventors of their time, that accolade probably belongs to the Greeks and the Babylonians, but they were outstanding implementors, planners, designers and project managers. How did the Romans plan their aqueducts keeping to a constant downward gradient of an average 0.3% or 3 metres for every kilometre with little tolerance.
