X'Jgħid il-Malti: Magri's Collection of Maltese Lore & the Ancient History of Malta

Fr Emmanuel Magri SJ (1851-1907) is best known for his Ħrejjef Missirijietna, which remains the foundational collection of folktales in the Maltese language. Over the decades, however, this collection has been taken out of its original context as part of a wider collection of Maltese lore (X’Jgħid il-Malti), and deprived of Magri’s original explanations and comparative material with the ancient Near East and with Classical mythology. This lecture will look again at Magri’s work on folktale and lore as part of his research on the ancient history of Malta, with his pioneering work as both an ethnographer and an archaeologist strongly intertwined.

Fr Josef Mario Briffa SJ is a Jesuit priest and archaeologist. He is Associate Professor of archaeology and ancient historical context at the Pontifical Biblical Institute (PBI) in Rome and Jerusalem, and Director of the PBI in Jerusalem.
