About the event

LaSalle County and the Civil War
During the Civil War, there were multiple Illinois Regiments that served in the US Army from LaSalle County. The Illinois regiments that were formed mostly from LaSalle County are the 12th Illinois Regiment, 20th Illinois Regiment, the 77th Illinois Regiment and the 104th Illinois Regiment. Also included are the 4th Illinois Cavalry Regiment and Cogswell's Battery from the 53rd Illinois Regiment.

Numerous Union leaders that came from LaSalle County will also be discussed, such as Generals WHL Wallace and his younger brother Martin Wallace, as well as General Oglesby, whom the town of Oglesby is named after. And the famous "Wild Bill" Hickok was a Union Army scout will be discussed.

LaSalle county soldiers were comprised of mostly German and Irish heritage soldiers and many were recruited from LaSalle County. Many of the LaSalle County soldiers will serve in the Western Theater of the war and will finish the war under the overall command of General Sherman and his famous "March to the Sea".

Presentation given by Professor Dennis Doyle of Joliet Junior College
Professor Dennis Doyle earned his BA from Colorado State University, his MA in American History from American Public University and a MA in Sociology from DePaul University. Since 1999 he has taught History and Sociology at Joliet Jr. College, in Joliet, Illinois; and his main concentration is his History of the Civil War and History of World War II courses. Professor Doyle is the current President of the Chicago Civil War Round Table. He is also a college and high school football referee and was the head referee for the August 2023 ESPN High School Kickoff Classic played in Dublin, Ireland.
