Promising made easy: Siri Thiwång

Welcome back to another semester! NKF starts off strong with a presentation on promising titled "Making Scanlon's Account of Promises Less Cognitively Demanding" by Siri Thiwång, who is a new master's student here in Uppsala. You are all warmly welcome to the presentation! Afterwards, there will be fika served at the department.

Here is the abstract:
"Scanlon’s account of promising, which I take to be grounded in intentionalism about speech acts, is too cognitively demanding: it requires promisees to ascribe higher-order mental states to the promiser in order to receive a promise. This excludes groups such as young children and some autistic people, who nonetheless can receive promises. In this presentation, I argue that Scanlon’s account can be revised by adopting an expressionist theory of speech acts. I develop a revised version of Scanlon's account of promises that is less cognitively demanding while preserving the normative force of the original account."
