Lecture with Claudia Merli Bodily about bodily integrity

On December 10th, we, together with Etnograferna, have invited Claudia Merli to give a guest lecture for us!

At the centre of bioethical controversy, as well as legal frameworks and their enforcement, genital cutting practices elicit strong reactions among bioethicists, scholars, activists, and human-rights advocates. The influence of local political-historical contexts and of biomedical hegemony on gendered bodies is mobilised across multiple political agendas. The intersection of ‘tradition’, ‘modernity’, medicine and bureaucracy often blinds us to the asymmetries in discourses surrounding female and male practices.

This presentation addresses some of these issues, drawing on ethnographic case studies and relevant literature. Can we carry universalist ethics to their full consequences?
