National Bison Day

Celebrate National Bison Day with the Big Bone Bison! Starting at 11 a.m., Big Bone Lick staff and the Lewis and Clark Trail Alliance: Ohio River Chapter, will begin with memorial dedications for Paul R. Simpson, beloved previous bison caretaker (2014-2023). Following the dedications, the Ohio River Chapter will present their annual "Adopt a Bison" check and present the Lewis and Clark National Trail Foundation - Meritorious Achievement Award to the herd's current caretaker, Claire Kolkmeyer.

Following the presentations, park staff will be available to answer questions about the herd and share artifacts, until 2 p.m.

National Bison Day has been observed on the first Saturday of November since 2012. The National Bison Legacy Act of 2016 designated bison as our nation's national mammal due to their ecological, cultural, and historical contribution to the United States and Native American culture. This program is FREE and open to the public.
