Please join us on Saturday September 6th from 6-8PM for an intimate evening with singer/songwriter, poet and storyteller John Terlazzo.
Since moving to Rochester from Pennsylvania last year, John has immersed himself in the local scene, immediately endearing himself to many upstate New York musicians with his talent, depth and huge heart. Shortly after his arrival he was welcomed with open arms to The Spheres Sufi Jam Band (think ‘Rumi meets the Grateful Dead’).
From a recent concert host: “John’s lyrics have a depth, weight, and insight to them that only comes from a life well-lived and a willingness to explore the mystery of one's own soul. Ursula Le Guin said, "The artist deals with what cannot be said in words." Through his lyrics, John says - with words - what cannot be said in words”.
“John Terlazzo speaks and howls, dances, whispers and raves when he sings, reads poetry, or teaches in a classroom or retreat center. He laughs, invites us into our Wonder and our Grief, discusses ideas with his audience then and there, "sermonizes" and apologizes, and then takes it back and laughs some more, and he invites us into thirty-some odd years of his poetry and the great works of his teachers - Yeats and Whitman, Pablo Neruda and William Blake, Rimbaud and Baudelaire, Emerson and Thoreau, Machado and Vallejo, The Beat Poets, Robert Bly and Gary Snyder, The Persian Poets - Kabir, Mirabai, Rumi, Hafez and on and on. He tells endless folk tales from the Sufis and Buddhists, the Gnostics and Hindus and Romany and more. He states clearly that the ability to make Art is a human birthright and that it involves primarily - "opening a place in the chest - allowing the River to flow forth".
