A Choice. Stephan Balleux & Guests
Inside a monumental space in transition, this weekend exhibition brings together seven artists whose works affirm the deliberate choice of a single medium: painting. Not out of intimate pleasure or passing interest, but as an essential field of work — where the surface becomes the visible outcome of a long process. This choice is decisive in how their works are received; no substitution is possible. It must be painting.
The artists presented also share a tendency toward complexity, a discreet complexity that does not reveal itself immediately.
Through this choice, they infuse their statements with a singular tone, one that resonates with the history of art while asserting painting’s capacity to gather, to connect, to absorb. For painting can contain everything: gestures, materials, detours, other disciplines.
It remains a site of ultra-contemporary experimentation, where the questions of image and gaze are continuously re-enacted. Within the multiplicity of forms and processes at play in this pictorial line-up, each artist pursues a distinctly individual approach that, when brought together, curiously maps a why through a how.
