Auditions for "The Playground" (Reader's Theater)

Auditions for The Merc Playhouse Readers’ Theater production of “The Playground” will be held on Friday (Nov. 21) from 5-6:30 p.m. and on Saturday (Nov. 22) from 1-2:30 p.m. at the theater in Twisp.

“The Playground,” by award-winning playwright James Dalglish, revolves around a narrative by the main character, Joan, who leaves her tenure-track position on the West Coast to follow her husband to New York. When she takes her 4-year-old to a playground in Central Park, she stumbles into a surreal world of wealth and privilege — with life-changing consequences. It is directed by Don Nelson.

Although “The Playground” is a one-woman show, several other characters appear in video projections that are flashback scenes from Joan’s life. Those roles will be pre-recorded and incorporated into the final production.

Other characters are Joan’s husband and her son; a female professor of anthropology; the wealthy wife of a hedge-fund manager, and her young son; several wealthy young Upper East Side mothers; a belligerent middle-aged man with a jaded view of New York; and an undocumented nanny who fled violence in her native Guatemala.
