History:
According to tradition, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to indigenous Juan Diego four times on Tepeyac Hill. The last of these miraculous encounters took place on December 12, 1531.
The event happened very early in the morning when the native of Cuautitlán went out in search of help for his sick uncle. The Patroness of Mexico met the humble man next to the ‘Pocito’ where she told him that his uncle was now healed.
Then, she asked him to climb to the top of the Tepeyac hill where he would find some roses, at a time and in a place where they did not bloom, which he would gather and take to the Lord Bishop as proof of his miraculous encounters in which he requested the construction of a temple near the place.
Around noon, Juan Diego was received by Bishop Zumárraga, who witnessed how several roses of Castile fell from Juan Diego's cloak, at the same time as the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was revealed from the cloth.
December 12, day of the Guadalupana
After the miracle of the 4th apparition of the Virgin on December 12, 1531, the event has been celebrated with great devotion ever since.

It is claimed that upon the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the hill of Tepeyac where Tonantzin's temple had been destroyed by the Spanish priests, the natives recognized Our Lady of Guadalupe as Tonantzin Coatlaxopeuh (Meaning "Our Lady" who emerges from the region of light like the Eagle from fire).[1]
In ancient Aztec culture, the goddess Tonantzin held a profound significance as the Sacred Mother Earth. Her name, meaning “our sacred mother” in Nahuatl, symbolized the nurturing archetype of Mother Earth and the abundance she provided to her children.
This connection highlights the maternal essence of Tonantzin, reinforcing her role as a pivotal figure within the indigenous Nahuatl speaking communities. Additionally, the link between Tonantzin and the Virgin of Guadalupe still resonates, honoring the belief that her appearance signaled the return of the Aztec mother goddess. This belief is deeply rooted in Mexico City, where the story of Tonantzin continues to inspire devotion and reverence among the faithful.
