About the event

Othello History Series (part 1)
Do you want to know why Theatre North and Tulsa Shakespeare Company are setting our fall production of "Othello" during the Civil War?

We're proud to announce an educational series featuring local author and historian, Carlos Moreno! This talk will cover the history of racial tension in the United States leading up to the Civil War through today, and lend an understanding into why the themes of Othello fit the time period. Upgrade your understanding of Othello before the show!

About our speaker:
Carlos Moreno is a community engagement strategist and civic hacker, helping purpose-driven organizations with data collection, qualitative research, and creating feedback loops for working collaboratively. He also works as freelance writer and a correspondent for "Focus: Black Oklahoma."

He is a contributing author for the book, "Proudly Serving: Public service in the digital age." He wrote two books ("The Victory of Greenwood" and “A Kids Book about the Tulsa Race Massacre”) about the building, destruction, and re-building of the Greenwood neighborhood in Tulsa, OK.

Carlos holds a Bachelor of Arts in Administrative Leadership and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the University of Oklahoma, with a concentration in civic technology. He was selected by national urban-affairs magazine NextCity as part of its 2014 Vanguard Class. In 2015, he was certified by IDEO and +Acumen, in the practice of Human-Centered Design. In 2022, he was certified as a facilitator by the Mayors Office of Resilience and Equity alongside the OSU Center for Public Life.

As serial entrepreneur, writer, and community activist, he was at the forefront of many of Tulsa’s innovative ideas and civic engagement movements including the formation of Tulsa Fablab, The Forge, YP Tulsa, Tulsa Global Entrepreneur Week, the Tulsey Awards, TulsaNow, and Smart Growth Tulsa.

Carlos currently serves on board of Tri-City Collective, World Stage Theatre Company, and the Urban Coders Guild.
