FOLIO has a day filled with activities for Friends of Libraries at the FOLIO Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with the Oklahoma Library Association on Friday, March 13.
"Let Them Know: Friends Sharing the Library Story," led by Sharon Saulmon, will will explore ways to share the great Library Stories by word of mouth, email, social media, web page, partnerships and more.
Author Greg Shaw will be sharing his book Last One Walking: The Life of Cherokee Community Leader Charlie Soap. You might not recognize the name of Charlie Soap, yet his role as a Native community organizer is significant. Combining memoir, history, and current affairs, Last One Walking charts for the first time the life and work of this influential Cherokee whose wife was Wilma Mankiller.
In a time of heightened debate over what belongs on library shelves, Friends of the Library groups play a vital role in defending access for all. This presentation examines the principles of intellectual freedom and the real-world challenges facing libraries today. Learn how to advocate for diverse collections, support staff and trustees, and promote understanding among community members with differing viewpoints. Janeal Walker, Director of Collection Services and Development at the Metropolitan Library System, will share her insights.
Best Friends and Friends of Libraries Week Awards as well as FOLIO Scholarships will be presented. Participants may also take advantage of OLA exhibits and other programs. Join the activities, network with librarians and friends, and share your Friends' activities. See you there!
