Etherton Gallery opens its 2025–2026 season with three compelling solo exhibitions: Jim Waid: Instars, Lawrence Gipe: Casbah Noir, and Alejandro Macias: In the Cases. In Instars, Jim Waid—long regarded as one of Arizona’s most accomplished painters—presents recent large-scale works that translate the desert’s shifting light and organic complexity into vibrant, abstract compositions. Casbah Noir finds Lawrence Gipe reexamining mid-century Hollywood depictions of colonial North Africa, transforming fleeting cinematic images into oil paintings that interrogate the aesthetics of power and exoticism. In In the Cases, Alejandro Macias offers a deeply personal body of work that reflects on identity, migration, and belonging through finely rendered, symbolically rich portraiture.
